If pinging is encountered while driving, you can slightly retard the timing advance, increase the octane of gas or recurve the mech and vacuum advance systems. If you had to rev the engine past 3500 rpm to get the mark to stop advancing, the mechanical advance in the distributor should be recurved in order establish best performance and ensure ...
Note the location of the wire going to number one cylinder and the vacuum advance bulb. Disconnect the electrical connector. Twi wires, the connector simply pulls apart. Loosen and remove the distributor clamp/retainer bolt. Usually ½ or 9/16 inch, this bolt can be difficult without a special distributor/timing wrench.
You can’t convert mechanical secondary carbs to vacuum, or vice versa. What is a Holley 3310? Once described as the small block Chevy of fuel delivery, the Holley 3310 carburetor (4150 and 4160 models) is still the go-to carburetor for anyone building a performance engine.

Sep 11, 2020 · Some vacuum advance canisters can be adjusted by inserting a small Allen wrench into the nose of the canister. Turning the Allen wrench clockwise will increase spring tension working against the vacuum applied to the diaphragm. That will decrease total advance and also slow the rate of advance versus vacuum. Oct 25, 2009 #2. 2009-10-25T02:05. Just get a stock one with a vacuum advance, probably from a 1970's car or truck. WIth a motor with lower compression the vacuum advance will give you better gas mileage and power when you are light on the gas. You can run it with points, pertronics or hook it up to your fancy box.
A vacuum advance distributor senses changes in the engine's LOAD -- and does so almost instantaneously. Mechanical advance distributors, which sense only changes in rpm, are meant for special purpose applications, such as as drag racing or poorly designed multi-carb set-ups.... or moving a loaded Type II with a 25hp engine.
The vac advance is an addition to the mechanical advance. The mechanical advance works and doesn't care where the throttle is, what load is on the engine or anything but rpm. More for flat out performance and consistency. The vac advance does all of that plus !!! Allows the engine to run cooler by advancing the timing.
